Yesterday, Conexus staff participated in the 2nd Annual Mid-Atlantic Coalition meeting hosted by Bon Secours at the Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, VA. MHCA Mid-Atlantic is the local coalition of the national association of organizations focused on meeting a variety of healthcare needs in the unique mobile clinic setting and includes groups from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

At the meeting, Conexus had the opportunity to tour units from the Bon Secours Care-A-Van and Rally/Children's National Medical Center fleets, network with other mobile health providers, and learn of some of the latest health concerns in mobile health care delivery. As Conexus looks to expand programming and services to reach some of our most “at-risk” populations this network of providers will be invaluable.

Conexus was honored to be among more than 300 business and community partners at the Fulghum Conference Center today for the Chesterfield County Public Schools Annual Business and Community Partners Appreciation Luncheon.  Conexus was recognized for service to Chesterfield County Schools through the pilot program and study which provided VisioCheck and follow-up eye exams and glasses to referred students.  The pilot offered screening to 3,585 students and found 1,059 with potential vision problems.  The age parameters of the study allowed for free onsite eye exams and glasses for 3rd grade students with a referral for follow-up vision care. Nearly half of the 546 eligible students took advantage of the free services; the pilot delivered 263 exams and 197 pairs of glasses!

Today, Governor Terry McAuliffe signed HB1408 into law!  HB1408 paves the way for schools to use outside resources at their choosing to improve vision outcomes for their students.  As Conexus works to elevate vision as a health priority, this bill offers permissive language for schools to be proactive in advancing vision outcomes in an effort to improve academic performance.  If you’d like to know more about to bring VisioCheck to your school division, contact Melissa Perry.

A Word from Our Partners

VisioCheck is a huge time saver for our nurse partners, in part because school nurses helped to design the program.  We value our partners and work very hard to meet their needs in conjunction with delivering improved vision outcomes for students.  We are grateful for the work of our school nurses and all they do to insure the overall health and well-being for their students!
School nurses are often the primary (and sometimes only) health care provider school aged children see.  Problems with acuity of children in school continues to increase concurrent with increases seen in childhood illnesses (asthma, Type 2 diabetes, mental health concerns) and the time we have to assess and care for children is very limited on the best of days.  Anything that allows us to save time on routine issues (screenings for example) give nurses more time for the care of acute and chronic health issues.
